Your phone will be eligible for a new device firmware update when it becomes available

There has been much confusion around the availability of Lumia Cyan update for those who already upgraded to Windows Phone 8.1 Developer Preview, but now things seem to have been clarified.

In the past, those who upgraded to Windows Phone 8.1 Developer Preview thought they would need to downgrade to be able to install the Lumia Cyan update on their smartphones.

Many users have not upgraded yet to Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 for fear of not being able to install Lumia Cyan when it becomes available for their smartphones.

The good news is Microsoft’s Joe Belfiore cleared up the situation of these updates and confirmed that regardless of what version of Windows Phone 8.1 Developer Preview you have installed on your phone, you would still receive the firmware update your handset is eligible for.

Basically, if you install Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 now, but your phone is still on Lumia Black, you will still be able to download and install Lumia Cyan when it becomes available for your smartphone without having to downgrade to another version of Windows Phone.

Belfiore was asked about the issue last month, but his answer was rather confusing, as he only confirmed that if you were on Windows Phone 8.1 Developer Preview you wouldn’t need to do anything to get the Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1, which started to roll out this week.

However, Windows Phone users wanted to know whether or not they would have to downgrade to Windows Phone 8.0 to get Lumia Cyan, before upgrading to Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1.

Thankfully, this question has been answered today, as Belfiore has stated that no matter which Windows Phone 8.1 version you’re on now, your phone will still be eligible for a firmware update when it becomes available for download.

In this regard, those who were having second thoughts on getting the Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 for fear of not being able to install Lumia Cyan on their phones should now rest easy and upgrade as soon as the latest Windows Phone update becomes available.

Speaking of which, for the time being, Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 seems to be available for Nokia smartphones only. There are many reports coming from HTC owners claiming that this update is not available for their devices yet. Microsoft is still mum on the matter, but we will keep an eye out for any additional details, so stay tuned.
