Smaller or more efficient components have been added to both consoles, reportedly

Sony has just filed some new paperwork in Indonesia that mentions new hardware revisions for the PS4 and the PS3 consoles, supposedly relating to new versions of the two devices that have more efficient components.

The PS4 was released last year to great critical and sales acclaim, while the latest edition of the PS3, the so-called Super Slim, made its market debut back in 2012, bringing a new form factor and more efficient hardware.

Now, however, it seems that Sony is planning on yet another revision for the PS3 as well as one for the PS4.

More specifically, it has just filed for the registration of two new "computer entertainment systems" with the Indonesian Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, according to DualShockers.

Of course, the most important one is for the PlayStation 4, which was released last year in the region with the code CUH-1006A. Now, it seems that a new model with the code 1106A is going to be released, according to the filing from Sony.

While taking into account previous strategies from the company, which launched the PS3 under the CECH and the subsequent Slim and Super Slim editions as CECH-2000 and CECH-4000 designations, it's unlikely that the new PS4 will boast a different form factor.

Instead, it is possible that it will be equipped with smaller or more efficient hardware, so that the console consumers less power or is no longer prone to some issues. The website also notes that a smaller graphics chip could be added to the console, as the PS3 slim CECH-2000 was turned into the CECH-2100 after it got a 40nm RSX graphics chip.

A change in hard drive size is also ruled out, as the previous strategy for the PS3 saw the last letters change from A to B or C, depending on the capacity of the disc equipped.

The new PS3 listing confirms that a new model with the code CECH-4306CH will soon be launched, hinting at a small change as well. The current PS3 super slim has the code CECH-4200, so it's quite likely that some more efficient or smaller components are going to be fitted inside the old home console.

It's worth pointing out that Sony has promised some big announcements at E3 2014 next month, so newer and better PS3 or PS4 models might see the light of day during its press conference on June 9. Until then, take this report with a grain of salt.
